2008-2009 TIP Teacher of the Year Awards Announced

Teachers’ Insurance Plan™ is pleased to announce the winners of our “Teacher of the Year Award” in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. These awards are given in recognition of teachers who have contributed to the betterment of their schools, students or educational communities.

Teachers’ Insurance Plan received nominations for the awards from parents, students, colleagues and administrators. It was gratifying to see so many worthy nominees and challenging to try to select the best from among so many dedicated teachers.


The 2008-2009 Teachers of the Year are:
 
 
  • Arizona: Janet Cerjak, a Kindergarten teacher at Sierra Verde Elementary in Glendale.
  • California: Scott Holloway, a science teacher at Westlake High School.
  • Connecticut: Debra Miles, an English teacher at Haddam-Killingworth High School in Higganum.
  • Florida: Mary Ellen Houghton, an art teacher at Nelson Elementary in Dover.
  • Georgia: John Shaply, a music teacher at Eastside Elementary School in Senoia.
  • Illinois: Jason Bolden, a sixth grade teacher at Westmont Junior High School in Westmont.
  • Maryland: Jeanne Ward, previously a Kindergarten teacher at Hancock Elementary School in Hancock.
  • Missouri: Jule Capps, a sixth grade teacher at Santa Fe Elementary in Waverly.
  • New York: Gioya Desouza-Fennelly, an eighth grade science teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School in New York.
  • Ohio: Koleen Foley, a first grade teacher at Central College Magnet School in Westerville.
  • Pennsylvania: Debbie Scoleri, a biology teacher at Penn Wood High School in Yeadon.
  • Texas: Teresa McCasland, a theater teacher at Terrell High School in Terrell.
  • Virginia: John Sammons, a teacher at the Greenbriar Intermediate School in Chesapeake.
  • Washington: Cathleen Howard, a second grade teacher at Conway School in Mount Vernon.
 
 
The 2008-2009 National Teacher of the Year is:
 
  • Mary Ellen Houghton, who was also our Florida State winner.
 
Cash awards of $1,000 were given to each state winner, and $500 was awarded to each winner’s school. The national winner also received a $2,500 travel voucher in addition to the cash award. Should you have any questions, please contact us at 1-888-288-6080 ext 7448.
 
Teacher of the Year nominations for the 2010-2011 school year are being accepted for the following states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. Nominations must be postmarked or electronically submitted no later than midnight on April 30, 2011 to be considered. Please see below for nomination form.
