2006-2007 TIP Teacher of the Year Awards Announced

Teachers’ Insurance Plan™ is pleased to announce the winners of our “Teacher of the Year Award” in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. These awards are given in recognition of teachers who have contributed to the betterment of their schools, students or educational communities.

Teachers’ Insurance Plan received nominations for the awards from parents, students, colleagues and administrators. It was gratifying to see so many worthy nominees and challenging to try to select the best from among so many dedicated teachers.


The 2006-2007 Teachers of the Year are:
 
Arizona: Jenifer Swapp, a ninth grade Special Education teacher at Safford High School in Safford.  
  California: Gregory Delano, a twelfth grade Economics and Civics teacher at Coalinga High School in Coalinga.
Connecticut: Waltrina Kirkland-Mullins, a third grade teacher at Davis Street Interdistrict Magnet School in New Haven.  
  Delaware: Richard Hooven, a music teacher at the William Henry Middle School in Dover.
Florida: Dianna Bone, a sixth grade science teacher at Electa Lee Magnet Middle School in Bradenton.  
  Illinois: J. Brent Hanchey, a ninth grade science teacher at Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School in Chicago.
Maryland: Lawrence Pugh, a seventh grade math teacher from Ernest Everett Just Middle School in Mitchellville.  
  Minnesota: Andrew Staudt, an Industrial Technology teacher at Bemidji High School in Bemidji.
Missouri: Lara Hebbert, a fourth grade teacher at McGregor Elementary in Springfield.  
  New York: Jo-Ann Esrick, a high school French teacher at Elmont Memorial High School in Elmont.
Ohio: Jeff Kilmer, a tenth grade History teacher at Cloverleaf High School in Lodi.  
  Pennsylvania: Tanya Morret, a history teacher at Mechanicsburg Middle School in Mechanicsburg.
Texas: Frank De La Rosa, a fourth grade teacher at Shimotsu Elementary School in Mission.  
  Virginia: Arlene Carter, a high school English teacher at Martinsville Alternative School in Martinsville.
Washington: Laurie Creighton, a Physical Education teacher at Olympia High School in Olympia.  
 
 
The 2006-2007 National Teacher of the Year is:
 
  • Dr. J. Brent Hanchey, who was also our Illinois State winner.
 
Cash awards of $1,000 were given to each state winner, and $500 was awarded to each winner’s school. The national winner also received a $2,500 travel voucher in addition to the cash award. Should you have any questions, please contact us at 1-888-288-6080 ext 7448.
 
Teacher of the Year nominations for the 2010-2011 school year are being accepted for the following states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. Nominations must be postmarked or electronically submitted no later than midnight on April 30, 2011 to be considered. Please see below for nomination form.
